The Advanced Therapies Wales Programme was established in 2020 on behalf of the Welsh Government. Advanced Therapies Wales is currently working collaboratively with NHS Wales, industrial and academia to harness the potential of Advanced Therapeutic Medicinal Products (ATMPs) for the health and prosperity for Wales. Our ambition is to address the unique and complex challenge of bringing these new therapies to Welsh patients through the development, delivery and commercialisation of cell and gene therapy.

This is a clear opportunity for Wales to become a recognised leader in the Advanced Therapies field and we plan to do so by developing strategic and sustainable partnerships with a number of public sector, academic, third sector and industrial stakeholders across our 5 work streams:

Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement

Putting patients and members of the public at the centre of the ATW approach.

Research, Development, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships

Supporting the delivery of clinical trials of ATMPs across Wales whilst working with partners to develop a vibrant commercial environment for advanced therapies.

Health Economics and Commissioning

Working with leading academic groups to support NHS commissioners in decision making regarding high cost drug procurement.

Service Delivery

Working with experts in regulatory affairs and workforce planning to ensure the right people are delivering the right therapies in a safe environment.

Estates, Planning and Infrastructure

Ensuring NHS Wales has the correct technical systems, clinical processes and estates infrastructure in place to deliver ATMPs.
